Navigating the Crossroads: Climate Change, GHG Emissions, and Economic Sectors in Egypt

Abstract

Unraveling the complexities of Egypt’s environmental dynamics, this chapter delves into the interdependent relationship between industrialization, climate, and economic restructuring. Spanning the temporal spectrum from 1970 to 2022, our investigation navigates the complex relationship between greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, population growth, and the pursuit of sustainable development. Against the global backdrop of climate imperatives, Egypt emerges as a paradigmatic case, witnessing upswing in emissions during the whole period. The chapter scrutinizes pivotal contributors such as public electricity production, manufacturing, and construction, laying the groundwork for nuanced climate policy formulations. Amidst the perturbations of escalating temperatures, the chapter also contemplates optimistic trajectories in emission reduction scenarios. By meticulously linking GDP dynamics with emissions, we examine the efficacy of economic reforms, IMF-supported initiatives, and the post-pandemic resurgence of emissions. Casting a forward gaze, the analysis projects heightened urbanization, accentuated vulnerabilities, and a steadfast commitment to renewable energy in Egypt’s future. The chapter concludes with offering insights for the formulation of an effective and adaptive environmental policy that harmonize Egypt’s economic trajectory with a conscientiously climate-responsive future.
