The women caregivers/men breadwinners model dominate the Egyptian culture. Consequently, women remain responsible for household tasks including caring for children or elderly, cleaning, cooking, etc. Nevertheless, men are the ones susceptible of gaining earnings for their families. For instance, in 2015, according to the World Bank data, Egyptian women spent 22% of their time daily on unpaid domestic care work compared to only 2% for men. The huge share of time spent on care activities usually hinders women from being economically active. This chapter overviews women’s economic, political, and social status in Egypt. The chapter discusses how the traditional social norms building a stereotype for gender roles within the society. Exploring women’ status in Egypt highlights the main challenges facing them and helps identifying required policies to strengthen their presence in the economic and political spheres.
