The Evolution of Labor Laws, Informality, and Women’s Participation in Egypt
Abstract
This chapter examines the main features of Egypt’s labor laws and norms in contractual arrangements and their evolution over time and presents some evidence how these features have hindered the efficient functioning of the Egyptian labor market. The extent of coverage of various contractual provisions, as well as gaps in coverage for various types of workers, are examined. A brief comparison with other middle-income countries in the region and worldwide is used to support conclusions and policy recommendations on best practices to ensure an efficient and dynamic labor market that succeeds at providing enough decent jobs, especially for women and youth.
