Telecommunications – Connecting Egypt to Economic Growth
Abstract
The study analyzes the role of telecommunications in driving Egypt’s economic growth. It specifically examines the economic impact of the adoption of mobile telecommunications and fixed broadband access to the Internet. The analysis reveals that a one percent increase in mobile subscriber adoption is associated with a 0.14 increase in GDP growth, while a similar rise in fixed broadband subscriptions drives a 0.095% GDP growth. The study highlights the potential of telecommunications in bridging the urban-rural digital divide in Egypt. Supply-side analysis shows that factors like telecommunications prices and industry competitive intensity have diverse impacts on the growth of telecommunications services. The study concludes with policy recommendations for enhancing telecommunications adoption, encouraging private investment, promoting digital literacy, fostering innovation, and developing balanced regulatory frameworks in Egypt. These strategies are aimed at leveraging the power of telecommunications for economic growth and digital inclusion.
